CONCEPT
gruff and reluctant healer learning how to show he cares (a lot).POWERS
life-force transferal. heals wounds and illness by transferring life force from one being to another; can be human, flora, or fauna. needs to have a hand each on both donor and recipient at the same time. drains rory if no donor's available. 🍃 diagnoses the recipient's medical issues when the donated life force enters them, beginning at the area of entry. this means he can pinpoint only certain issues or heal one person entirely. the latter's much more taxing. 💀 fatal for the donor if too much life force is taken.indestructibility. becomes impervious to damage & can be shared via physical touch. this takes most of his concentration (he's working on it!). this happens automatically when life-force transferal's in progress. looks like translucent scales all over — so hot right now!
accelerated healing. his body recovers from wounds and illnesses faster than average. the speed depends on how much extra energy he's able to get, via additional food and rest.
PERSONALITY
a loner by circumstance, he's quiet and brusque if you don't know him well, affectionate and a complete brat if you do. more talkative on the network than in person, more at home in the outdoors than under a dome. while private, he has plenty of his own big feelings and cares a lot — he's concerned when someone seems down and will try to fix it. + caring, reliable, protective, hard worker who takes his job seriously, great in an emergency, mr. safety ~ quiet in person (less so on the network), sensitive, pacifist, non-confrontational unless someone's being mistreated, 50/50 monosyllabic loner/poorly socialized golden retriever – brusque, stubborn, ain't the sharpest tool in the shed 🎶, disorganized, accustomed to loneliness, terrible long-term planner, bad w/ tech likes. the outdoors, animals, peace & quiet, cooking, babysitting, attention from a choice few, stargazing & space stuff, music (any and all), baseball (colorado rockies!), rom coms (especially nora ephron ones), star trek doesn't. meetings, work bonding activities, violence/conflict, cities, formal wear, crowds, parties, surprises, being lied to or about, being put in charge, public speaking, customer serviceAPPEARANCE

pre-rory. rory's parents were high school sweethearts from southeast montana, outed as parents-to-be when darlene attended their prom seven months pregnant. the ensuing arguments didn't go well — both sets of parents insisted their kids do what they thought was best. except hudson and darlene, now 18, weren't those kids anymore, and they were convinced they could follow their dreams (hudson of gaining fame as a steer wrestler, darlene as a musician) if they only listened to each other. so they packed up, cut contact their families (to be fair, both fairfaxes and dixons kind of sucked), and moved with infant rory to wyoming.
1976: early years. hazelton, WY. his dad, hudson, split his time between long hours at a nearby ranch and longer hours as a steer wrestler on the rodeo circuit while his mom, darlene, worked as a homemaker and part-time florist. when rory's 11, hudson dies during a competition; one too many horns to the gut. when he's 14, darlene's diagnosed with melanoma. rory quits school, getting a wrangler job to keep their dwindling family unit afloat. and it works, more or less, until darlene passes away a couple years later.
1994: cowboy. northern WY. 18, alone, and saddled with medical and property debts that he can't afford, rory sells everything and graduates from wrangler to cowboy. being outdoors, handling animals, hard work to keep his thoughts quiet — the life suits him.
one summer he's tasked with escorting a research team through the mountains that line the ranch. he expects it to suck. instead he falls in like with charlie finch (uncle to evan finch), a student studying high-altitude flora. soon enough charlie's moving back to his hometown for his phd and rory follows him to boston.
2000: firefighting. boston, MA. rory bartends his way through his GED, then his EMT cert. EMTs his way through firefighter exams. firefight(er)s his way through boston. and, in '03 when rory's 27, the rifts begin. charlie's researching in the albertan rockies when rory learns that he went into one. charlie never comes home. let's all agree this was a bad time for rory that we don't need to dwell on.
2004: powers manifest. rory's on a call tending to a heart attack victim who by all accounts won't even make it to the ER... and then makes a full recovery when one of his colleagues drops dead. rory's positive that not only were these two things connected, but that both happened because of him. he felt their respective life forces moving through him. spooky. very, very bad. one purple papercut later confirms that he's a liminal.
rory tries to keep calm and cope on but between his guilt over doing a manslaughter, his anxieties over repeating a manslaughter, and his fear of IRIS disappearing liminals, it... goes poorly. what follows are not the best years of rory's life. he quits boston FD and returns to bartending in an attempt to stay under the radar.
2007: western massachusetts. he shacks up with a boyfriend and they move to western MA. he returns to firefighting, this time rural, because fewer medical calls means fewer chances of a repeat performance or being outed as a liminal. but overall he's an anxious, and frankly paranoid, mess. it takes a toll on his relationship, which falls apart soon after.
2008: friendship detour! while in burlington, VT to help his rommate achieve her dreams of a hot rebound, a stranger (later identified as lou sweetapple) starts a fist-fight with rory. they sort out their differences and have been inseperable ever since.
2009: firefighting. maine. rory travels to maine for a water rescue training course and ends up smitten with local wildlife photographer sparrow freling. they hit it off in record time, and after an evening swapping stories over drinks, rory wakes up in sparrow's bed. what becomes their relationship gains traction fast and only a few months later rory's packing his bags, moving in, and applying to the local fire department.
in sparrow, rory finds the partnership he thought he'd be denied after losing charlie. their next few years are by all accounts perfect. they hike and camp whenever they find the time, they play hockey in the same league (nonviolent rory even finding his own, personal enforcer), sparrow helps rory accept that the larger freling clan actually wants him around.
eventually, however, their enthusiastic, hypothetical conversations about marriage and fatherhood become more serious and rory freezes. wanting kids is easy, but raising them? when he grew up with so little parental participation of his own? — his anxieties snowball until he can't broach the topic at all. sparrow eventually takes the hint and ends their relationship, and rory quietly leaves his now-ex to build the life he deserves.
2013: ohio dude ranch. public perception of liminals eventually improves, it takes rory more time still to accept that IRIS won't play boogeyman any longer, and by that point he's burnt out af. and if you haven't figured out his MO yet, he finds direction in a new boyfriend — one who lives in ohio. he quits the maine FD and his new man hooks him up with a job as a guide at a dude ranch. the only good thing is the horses. he hates customer service. the whole thing feels like selling out and rory isn't happy. they break up a year later.
2015: firefighting. burlington, VT. destined forever to follow attractive men to new places, rory meets leon wingrove when visiting lou in burlington and after a few months of LDR, he moves in with leon. it's another happy period — leon teaches rory to cook more than steak and casserole, rory teaches leon how to camp without dying, and rory's cat gets bespoke, gourmet meals.
two years in, liminal plants destroy burlington and leon wants to evacuate to manhattan, where he can follow his big-chef–big-city dreams. rory
2017: farm life. elkins, WV. where do you go when you don't have anywhere? why, your best friend's farmstead, of course! rory spends the next year living and working on lou's farm. he fosters a horse for a while. it's a pretty neat life.
2018: enodia staiona. tired of being stressed out by the unknown and pretty sure his firefighting CV's too full of red flags for a new station, rory applies to the enodia research station. he's hired with the first cohort.
2023: homecoming. when the station closed in february, he, lou, and mouse rented an rv for a cross-country road trip. rory filled out most of his basic granola girl parks water bottle stickers. 😌

☀️ mew'n'brewers know. would rather be on litter duty than make latte art. only took the job because it's the easiest route to max cat time & foster kittens.
☀️ party boy? avoids most station parties and events, leaves many early. does club — on his own terms and only with a couple people. prefers weed over alcohol but will partake in either/both.
☀️ everyone knows. if he doesn't know you well he can be a grumpy introvert in person but on the network he's often your mostly-friendly neighbour. sometimes has to give newbies the grand tour — given how monosyllabic he is with strangers, it's probably hazing. dropped out of the ninth grade.
☀️ friends know. he loves quality time and will run any errand with you. huge brat to his closer friends; they're also the only people he asks for the attention of. (and ask he does!) while open about feelings, he doesn't want his own negative ones to be other people's problems. cleans and/or gets high to de-stress, one usually leads to the other. regularly journals before bed in a small black moleskine he often keeps in his back pocket — sometimes it's events, others it's maps or landscape doodles. both parents died when he was young and he has no contact with any extended family.
